Mission
Ty Nelson provides bright and stimulating learning and living environments that embrace individuality, inspire confidence and encourage the young people to learn through having fun. By focusing on the child and their strengths, personality, abilities and aspirations, as well as their specific needs, our residents grow into happy and independent young people with confidence and a life that is both socially-valued and fulfilled.
We support young people to be active and valued members of their community, through a model of education and care that is underpinned by Positive Behaviour Support, which ensures that positive behaviour and learning are celebrated, repeated and reinforced.
We support residents to develop skills that help them to progress both in education and in life, encouraging them to make positive choices and maintain their overall wellbeing.
We also work closely with families, carers and professionals so that education is delivered with the resident's best interests at heart.
History
Nelson is a small, close-knit village located in the county borough of Caerphilly, South Wales. Nestled near the border of Merthyr Tydfil and surrounded by rolling hills and countryside, Nelson offers a peaceful setting with a strong sense of community. The village developed during the 19th century as a result of the booming coal mining industry in the South Wales Valleys. Its name is believed to have originated from a local inn named after Admiral Lord Nelson, which became a focal point of the area as it grew. Today, Nelson retains its village charm while offering easy access to nearby towns and major road links, making it a desirable place to live for those seeking both tranquillity and connectivity.
Just a short drive away, Caerphilly is a historic town best known for its impressive medieval fortress, Caerphilly Castle, the largest castle in Wales and the second largest in Britain. Built in the 13th century by Gilbert de Clare, the castle played a key role in the power struggles between the Normans and the Welsh and remains a major tourist attraction today. Caerphilly expanded significantly during the Industrial Revolution, with coal mining shaping its growth and economy. In modern times, the town has become a hub of culture, commerce, and community, blending its rich history with modern development. It’s also famously home to Caerphilly cheese, a traditional Welsh product that has put the town on the culinary map.
Visiting Arrangements
Maintaining contact with families is of paramount importance and of course we welcome visits on a pre-arranged basis. Indeed, we ask that family visits are planned so that we can ensure that children are prepared for visits and possible changes to their routines.
