Academy Living at The Orb
We believe that learning should be a lifelong pursuit. All adults have access to The Orb: a pioneering work experience initiative which was recently awarded the Careers Wales Quality Mark. The Orb is a charity shop, café, laundry, kitchen and office all rolled into one bright and friendly high street centre. Adults are supported to work to an individualised timetable, building on their skills week by week.
They may be greeting and serving customers, making drinks and snacks for busy shoppers, washing, ironing, pricing-up and stocking clothes and other items for sale in the shop, designing window displays and much more. At The Orb we offer a range of ASDAN accreditations that mark the progress that adults make in learning about and engaging with the wider world and the immediate community.
Our primary aim is to provide a safe environment that encourages individuality, self-confidence, self-esteem and lifelong learning.
Ours is a person-centred approach. We encourage adults to learn and develop skills that will enable them to play an active role in their community, supporting them to make their own informed decisions. We also work closely with families and carers to support individuals to develop and maintain relationships.
We encourage our residents to participate in positive risk taking, helping them to develop roles, responsibilities and confidence within their daily lives and, at all times, we support them to become independent via a focus on lifelong learning.
We want to improve and maintain the quality of life for adults by nurturing and promoting independence. This is underpinned by Positive Behaviour Support - focusing on setting realistic goals and understanding behaviour in order to provide our residents with proactive coping strategies to overcome their difficulties. This non-sanction-based model of care celebrates and reinforces good and positive behaviour, leading residents to associate their home life with being happy.
Orbis offers a multi-disciplinary model of care, learning and therapeutic support. Our therapeutic model includes Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Positive Behaviour Support.
We also contract other specialist health professionals to offer specialist support for specific needs.
We are always happy to be contacted for further information about Ty Carreg and we encourage anyone with an interest in our home to get in touch to find out more about what we do and how we do it.
