Salary: £12,987.00 /year which will increase with experience and on completion of QCF level 3

The school is located at the historic Dan y Coed site in the West Cross area of Swansea, within a minute’s walk of the long stretches of sand that are typical of the region.

Within minutes of Swansea with its vibrant city centre, and castles, parks and hidden coastal coves and secluded bays there is a wealth of things to do in the surrounding area.

Job Purpose:

To provide education and organisational support to teachers, guide pupils during structured and non- structured sessions and assist each pupil to achieve their full potential. Offer personal care to pupils, in a respectful manner.

The Learning Support Assistant will work according to the values and beliefs of the School and Orbis Education and Care as a whole, including policies on equality of opportunity and the involvement of people who use services.Within Orbis Education and Care overall vision of providing high quality residential, educational and training programmes pupils with Autistic Spectrum Disorders and Asperger’s Syndrome, and their families, the main roles involved in this post are:

» To provide high quality teaching and learning opportunities.

» To show flexibility and differentiation when working across all ability levels.

» To provide structured learning opportunities through effective classroom management.

» To ensure that all pupils are working towards their agreed accreditation.

» To use a variety of teaching approaches and activities to develop pupils’ learning through planned

Adult intervention and independent learning opportunities both within the college environment and more inclusive community contexts.

» To support and contribute to the School’s total communication approach.

» To offer teaching opportunities, which give concrete learning experiences.

» To maintain effective partnerships with parent/carers to promote pupils’ learning and to provide information to parents about targets, achievements and progress.

» To help produce quality displays around the School and ensure that they are updated regularly.

» To assist pupils upon arrival, during the morning routines, lunch/break times and upon departure.

» To help the teachers prepare the learning environment and maintain it to a good standard. This may include developing interactive displays that celebrate the pupils’ achievements. And clearing up afterwards, particularly in practical subjects such as Home Management or Art

» To pass on information about pupils’ achievements and any other issues to their link tutor or other relevant staff.

» To complete all necessary educational/residential paperwork to ensure an effective transfer of information.

» To support pupils in activities based on and off the School site.

» To offer a high level of personal care to pupils, that respects their privacy and is appropriate to their culture, age and gender.

» To attend staff meetings as required and follow pupils personal plans to increase understanding and awareness of the pupil’s individual needs.

» To help collate, evaluate and maintain pupils’ progress records.

» Guiding pupils in carrying out the work set by the teacher (this may be as the person in charge of a small group with no teacher present)

» Assisting with therapy programmes

» Photocopying, laminating, assisting with classroom displays and preparing teaching materials

» Support in the upkeep of TEACCH resources and ensure that the classroom environment is supportive of each learners needs.

Care duties

» Giving assistance to pupils who require help during morning routines, lunch/break times or when going to the lavatory.

» To support and manage pupils with their personal care needs, this includes the completion of all self help routines within residence.

Trips/Visits

» Assisting with the planning and implementation of off site activities and organised trips. Staff may be required to support pupils in groups or individually in accordance with the School risk assessments. Where applicable, staff may also be required to drive the school vehicles in order to provide transport.

Other

» Any other duties related to the nature of this post, necessary to promote effective learning. Many of these tasks will be conducive with the role of an REW and therefore it is crucial that both LSA’s and REW’s work together to complete the necessary tasks for our learners.

» To undertake any other duties which are consistent with the post and/or needs of the service.

» To work in any other Orbis Education and Care location where necessary, in order to meet the wider needs of the service.

»This post is subject to an enhanced criminal record check by the Criminal Records Bureau (DBS).

» Previous experience working within special educational needs is desirable
