OUR LEARNING:

This term in Class KT, we have continued to enjoy new learning experiences despite many disruptions last term and this term.

As part of the 14-19 pathway, we are working on the ASDAN Transition Challenge.

So far, our Transition Challenges are:

  • Show you can listen to a story

We enjoy listening to stories individually or as a group. We make choices for our preferred stories from the class book box. We love storytelling using Sensory Story Sacks. We are beginning to use Story Massage for one or two familiar stories.

  • Show you can use kitchen measures

We have been using measuring cups and jugs to make lots of different recipes. We are beginning to recognise big and small spoons.

  • Work with your tutor or other learners to make something you can eat/drink

We have been making and exploring healthy snacks including apple donuts, banana sushi, fruit kebab rockets, grape poppers and trail mix. We’ve also enjoyed making our own ice cream and choosing favourite toppings. We run our own weekly class café where we set the table with cloth, mats, plates and cups. Then we make drinks for ourselves or others: milkshake or juice by measuring powders. Lastly, we enjoy using our PECS books to choose a biscuit from the menu before tidying everything up!

  • Help someone carry out a household job

We have been practising a range of household tasks including: some paper recycling; using litter pickers; a number of laundry tasks from rolling socks to sorting lights and darks and pegging on the line; washing and drying dishes; wiping tables; cleaning the floor with vacuum, broom or dustpan and brush; tidying by placing materials back in their correct containers.

  • Take part in a religious celebration or festival

We have taken part in many celebrations this year as a class and as part of the wider school events, including- Diwali food tasting and candle making; School Christmas market and Santa’s grotto; dragon dancing and sensory stories for Chinese New Year; and making our favourites on Pancake Day. We took part in whole school dragon making competition for St. David’s Day. We have also celebrated our birthdays with class parties inviting other staff and peers. Next term, we will experience celebrations linked to Easter, Ramadan, Passover and Holi. These events have also helped us work on social interaction skills whilst being with others.

  • Show you can behave appropriately in a public place

We all need to build confidence in accessing different public places and managing our behaviour and sensory needs in these settings. We follow individual plans, but places that have been visited by our students include: Swansea library, Mumbles local area; Aberavon promenade;  a range of shopping environments; a range of public eating facilities; a range of parks and playgrounds; a range of walking opportunities in safe surroundings; cycling and trampoline parks; indoor soft play; theatre and cinema shows. One of our students has a community work experience placement at the Orb charity shop/café and we are hoping to help another student start soon…

  • Show the differences between yourself and your friends.

As part of science/PSHE, we are learning to identify our own features and body parts and recognise differences in others. Next term we are hoping to think about some of the changes in our bodies as part of growing up, in close discussion with parents about what we think I need to know…

  • Show that you can find your way around

We are all displaying growing confidence to explore and use different areas of the school. We are being encouraged to visit other classrooms/peers and join whole school events in the hall or garden. Over time, we are hoping to encourage our students to complete jobs and make deliveries to different parts of the school.

  • Take part in new leisure activities for social interaction and physical activity

We spend time together learning to ‘share focused attention’ and play as part of our weekly ‘Attention Engagement’ sessions. We can find being with others difficult, but we are all learning to enjoy shared experiences and take part in new turn-taking games. Other group experiences we enjoy for wellbeing include: massage, TACPAC Sensology and messy play.

We are all responding to encouragement from staff to be more physically active during the day using our school garden and offsite opportunities. We also frequently enjoy dancing in the classroom to different movement videos or favourite songs. We have a weekly sensory circuit, dance and yoga sessions in the hall alongside other peers from school.

  • Produce a creative piece of work for display

As a class, we have all developed an interest in colouring which is good for our fine motor skills and we have produced lots of lovely pictures! We have contributed to different themed displays. In the Autumn term, we did two displays: Celebrating our differences with hand print/footprints and collages of our favourite things and A Harvest display about fruit and vegetables. For the Spring term, we have all responded well to a weekly Creative session integrating music, Makaton signing, exploration of props and role play followed by printmaking based around a theme. We have covered: Winter; Autumn; A rainy day; Day at the beach; Chinese New Year; Valentine’s Day; St. David’s day. We have explored different techniques to make snowflake prints, autumn leaf prints and now we are exploring sea shell and sea life prints.
